Investing in Health Care

The Nanaimo Regional Hospital District (NRHD) provides funding in support of capital projects at local healthcare facilities including Nanaimo Regional General Hospital (NRGH).

The shortage of appropriate health care facilities and specialized services is reaching a critical point in our region. This is leading to:

  • A lower standard of medical care
  • Considerably poorer health outcomes for patients and families in the Central and North Island
  • High costs to our healthcare system.

Working with Island Health, the NRHD supports a healthy region by investing in healthcare infrastructure such as new buildings. The NRHD is pushing for better healthcare facilities including:

  • A new patient tower
  • A cancer centre
  • A cardiac catheterization lab
  • A high acuity unit (currently under construction), to be located at NRGH.
  • A new long-term care facility.

Several programs, especially cardiology (heart health) and oncology (cancer treatment and care), are completely under-resourced and some specialized services are not currently available north of the Malahat. This means patients in the Central and North Island who have had heart attacks, heart disease or cancer may have trouble getting the care they need, when and where they need it. Many patients are having to travel to Victoria or Vancouver for treatment.

The NRDH has a financial plan to meet its partnership and funding obligations to make these critical healthcare projects a reality for Central and North Island residents. We are urging the provincial government to move these vital projects forward.
