Broombusters are back.

On Friday, April 19, 18 volunteers cut big broom that covered more than 200 metres on the Coombs-Parksville Rail Trail.

Joanne Sales of the Broombusters Invasive Plant Society (BIPS) said it was the first cut of the season in the Parksville Qualium Beach area.

Sales said three or four cuts are planned for each week until the end of May.

“Our intention is to create fire breaks along the trail,” said Sales. “The broom is already showing signs of drying out, which makes (it) even more flammable. Island Corridor Foundation is planning to mow the broom on the tracks itself in the next few weeks.”

Sales said new volunteers are always welcome, with more information available at www.broombusters.org or via email at info@broombusters.org.
