Online scammers steal thousands of dollars from PQB residents

Oceanside RCMP also deal with property theft, vandals

Online scammers continue to plague Parksville Qualicum Beach residents. 

On June 4, a resident reported being scammed for $1,500 responding to a computer pop-up ad requesting the owner to purchase gift cards to remove unwanted software. The same day, a resident reported being defrauded out of $1,400 responding to a link alleging to pay for property they were selling that required the resident’s banking information. On June 5 a resident reported defrauded out of $7,500, responding to requested for an e-transfer.

Oceanside RCMP received 278 complaints the week of June 3 to June 9. Some of the other incidents included:

On June 4, a Giant Trance bicycle, Husqvarna 16-inch chainsaw and Stihl 16-inch chainsaw were reported stolen in a shed break-and-enter in the 2900 block of Dolphin Drive in Nanoose Bay. The same day, a KHS mountain bike was reported stolen in the 100 block of Island Highway East in Parksville.The day before, three totes of children’s clothing were reported stolen from a yard in the 4500 block of Gallow Road in Bowser.

On June 5, a jerry can of gasoline was reported stolen from a property on Roberton Boulevard in Parksville Two females were later arrested and released for a court date in September. Also June 5, two kayaks were stolen in the 600 block of Hoy Lake Road in Qualicum Beach.Two females were later located in possession of the kayaks and were arrested and released for a court date in September. 

On June 6, tools and a pressure washer were reported stolen in the 500 block of Belyea Road in Qualicum Beach. The items recovered by police the same day.

On June 7, an iPod and cash were reported stolen from an unlocked vehicle in the 3500 block of Outrigger Road in Nanoose Bay. On June 9, a vehicle was reported vandalized with damage to the doors in the 3800 block of Melrose Road in Qualicum Beach, on June 9. Also June 9, Canada Post mailboxes were reported damaged in the 200 block of Dogwood Street in Parksville.
