In the coming weeks the public gets a chance to get an up-close and personal look at the growing sport of lawn bowls.
The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club is getting ready for another busy season, with its open house scheduled for April 20-21 from 1-4 p.m. each day, rain or shine.
The club invites the public to come out, visit the facilities and experience the fun and challenge of the sport of lawn bowling. No experience is necessary and there is no cost to come and try it out, PLBC said in a written release.
The game shares a lot of similarities with curling, but also with pool, darts, and even golf. Curlers do well at bowls and it is often described as curling’s ‘summer cousin.’ Its unique quirks and challenges make lawn bowling enjoyable, and it is a game that can be played by practically any age group.
Visitors are asked to wear flat-soled shoes and comfortable clothes that allow for easy movement. After a quick overview of the game and some basics from some of the the club’s certified coaches, enthusiasts will have the opportunity to get out on the green and play a mini-game or two.
From April 24-27, PLBC is offering a deal on a four-lesson package for only $20. Club coaches and members will be on site to teach and assist in the basics, and get novice players ready for game play in late April.
The Parksville Lawn Bowling Club is located at 149 E. Stanford Ave. For more information, call the clubhouse at 250-954-3930 or check out the website parksvillelawnbowlingclub.com.
